Environmental Care at Pähkli Farm

Caring for the environment is natural for Pähkli Farm. Our vacation house is located on the farm's yard, near another farm, in the heart of a beautiful and nature-rich conservation area. It is important to us that the environment surrounding us remains clean, biodiverse, and sustainable. We make sure that our daily activities are as economical and resource-efficient as possible.

At the vacation house:

  • We use eco-labeled cleaning and washing products, and environmentally friendly, ecologically pure products and materials wherever possible.
  • We prioritize local services and products.
  • We sort waste and make the most of it on-site: organic waste is composted, paper/cardboard is used as kindling for the sauna or fireplace, bottles are returned for recycling, and glass containers are reused.
  • We prevent the use of disposable tableware – the kitchen is fully equipped with sufficient durable tableware.

Our goal is to offer a vacation experience that brings people closer to nature and the land. We believe that environmental care is directly connected to a person’s personal connection to nature. The people involved in our vacation house do their work with passion.

Pähkli Farm’s Environmental Policy

The goal of Pähkli Farm’s vacation house is to provide as nature-close an experience as possible, based on the preservation and appreciation of natural and cultural heritage in our daily operations. Our activities are guided by the following principles:

  • The daily operations of the vacation house do not create additional negative impact on the natural environment nor disturb local life.
  • Resources are used efficiently and reasonably.
  • Our environmental values and operational principles are clear and can also be followed by our guests.
  • We value local eco-friendly products and services and offer them to our guests.
UNESCO

Hiiumaa – Part of the Global UNESCO Network

Hiiumaa, along with other West Estonian islands, has been part of the global "Man and the Biosphere" program since 1990.

The environment here, which has been nurtured for centuries, the unique traditions, and the hardworking and humorous locals have earned special recognition precisely because they have learned to live in harmony with nature. Life on the island is like that of a sailor on a long sea voyage. One must always pay attention to the weather and wind, think about whether enough water and food are packed, and ensure that the boat is equipped to handle any situation. Nothing is simply thrown away if it can still be reused. Life on the boat is efficient and well-thought-out, with every item on board having its place and purpose. Living on the island or on a boat requires ingenuity and the ability to make the most of what is available. And one must understand the sea, respecting it rather than fearing it. An islander knows when it’s the right time to go to the forest or to the sea. Nothing here happens without reason, and everything is experienced with the knowledge that today’s actions should leave something for tomorrow.

The UNESCO "Man and the Biosphere" program focuses on encouraging more people to make choices that promote a sustainable lifestyle. In simple terms, it encourages a way of living that resembles a long sea journey. It depends on each of us how well we can pass on the environment we enjoy today to future generations.

UNESCO Biosphere Reserves are unique areas where you encounter pristine nature, taste local food with natural energy, and experience art inspired by nature.
